  1. Place the sugar in a shallow bowl; dip rim of chilled glass into sugar so the rim is coated.
  2. Put ice into a cocktail shaker. Pour gin and lime juice over the ice, and shake well. Pour drink into prepared glass and serve.

This wasn't very good. tasted like limeaid, not a gimlet. You're supposed to use Rose's Lime Juice AND fresh lime, and no sugar. I generally use vodka, too. Oh well.-04 Dec 2002


One of my favorite drinks! I usually make mine 2:1 gin to Rose's Lime (the best sweetened lime juice), and garnish with a lime instead of the sugared rim.-05 Jan 2006

The Gimlet is one of those drinks you want in spring and summer, when all you need is a boozy, refreshing short drink — if citrusy, even better. Incredibly straightforward, the three-ingredient drink is all about freshness. There’s no doubt the Gimlet has aged well it’s as popular today as it has ever been.

Known as the high-browed cousin of the tropical daiquiri, there’s certainly room for the Gimlet at any party, especially in backyard grilling get-togethers when thirst-quenching drinks are in order. Here’s all there is about the Gimlet, its history, variations and how to make it.

What Is A Vodka Gimlet

This is a classic cocktail that is so easy to make. It really just has 2 ingredients. Vodka and sweetened lime juice. Mix and pour over ice! Can’t get much easier than that. Similar to a Vodka soda, but without the fizziness.

I like mine a little heavier on the lime juice. It is super easy to make those adjustments at home. You can mess around with the ratios and find what you think is perfect.

Use Homemade Lime Cordial for the Best Gimlets at Home

Making a gimlet is very simple. All you need to do is shake lime cordial with vodka and ice then strain into a glass. And while it is pretty tasty (and classic) when made with something like Rose’s, we really loved the idea of making that part ourselves.

After a little research and testing things out, we came up with a homemade lime cordial that’s fresher, zestier and brighter tasting than Rose’s. It’s a combination of lime simple syrup and fresh lime juice. It’s seriously good and works beautifully with vodka — and, if you were wondering, it’s great with gin, too. So you can easily make a classic gin gimlet.

How to Make Homemade Rose’s Lime Cordial

We start with a few limes. Since we use the zest and juice, we like to clean them. It may seem a little odd, but limes are usually coated with some sort of wax and since we don’t really want any wax in our cocktail, it’s best to remove it.

To remove the waxy layer from limes (or any citrus), just dunk them into boiling water for a few seconds then wipe them clean with a dish towel.

Now that we’re working with squeaky clean limes, we move on to making the lime syrup. Use a microplane or fine zester to remove the outer layer of rind from one of the limes — you are only looking for the green part, not the white part, which can be bitter.

Add the lime zest to a pan with equal parts sugar and water then bring everything to a simmer. As the water simmers, the sugar will dissolve and the oils and flavor of the lime zest will seep out, making a lime flavored simple syrup.

Let the syrup cool, strain it, add some fresh lime juice and you’re left with a sweetened, fresh lime cordial that’s ready to be made into a gimlet.

Ginger Gimlet Recipe

The typical gimlet recipe is made with gin or vodka, lime juice, and some kind of sweetener (sugar or simple syrup). Vodka gimlets have always been one of my favorites because they are simple, sweet, and tart (yum, lime juice).

To spice things up a little, I knew I wanted to make a ginger simple syrup with the leftover ginger. I also grabbed a couple limes and some fresh rosemary (you should always have some on hand anyway).

After perusing the liquor section, I grabbed a bottom of St. Germain, and declared my cart full and wallet empty.

And this is what happened:


  • 1.5oz Vodka or Gin (I used Tito’s because it’s Patrick’s fave. Also successful with rum or whiskey.)
  • 1.5oz FRESH, HAND-SQUEEZED lime juice. Trust me on this.
  • 0.75oz Ginger Simple Syrup (recipe to come)
  • 0.25oz St. Germain (elderflower liqueur)
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary (one for mixing, one for garnish)

Do This in This Order

  1. Measure & pour all ingredients over a handful of ice in a Boston shaker (This is the one I have.)
  2. Shake vigorously for 5-7 seconds
  3. Strain & pour over fresh ice in a cocktail glass
  4. Garnish with fresh rosemary sprig

Gimlets are traditionally served up (without ice) in a martini glass, but for this fresh and floral take, I preferred it over ice.

As I mentioned, I tried this drink with rum and whiskey, and those turned out really great as well. And if lime isn’t your thing, fresh lemon juice works as well! (Just don’t call it a gimlet anymore ). )

There you have it! We had friends over to play DnD when I was testing out the recipes, and the fresh cocktails turned out to be a big hit. We ended up making them every day this weekend. Whoops!

  • If you don’t have a Nick and Nora glass, any small coupe-style glass is fine
  • Instead of a lime wedge, you could garnish with a wheel of lime that has been sliced to fit on the edge of your glass. A twist of lime peel would also look attractive
  • If you don’t have a cocktail shaker an old jam jar or airtight container make good substitutes
  • This is an easy cocktail to scale up depending on the capacity of your cocktail shaker. You could make it in batches and just give it a quick mix before serving in case the ingredients have separated

What is a Nick and Nora glass?

It is a small glass for serving cocktails similar to the Martini glass but more rounded. The glass was named after characters in the thriller ‘The Thin Man’ and is a very elegant and attractive glass for cocktails. It’s best for drinks that are designed to be sipped slowly and are often very strong.

Who invented the Gimlet cocktail?

This cocktail is thought to have been created by Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette, a doctor for sailors who used the gin to offset the taste of lime juice, which was used to prevent scurvy.

Rangoon (Basil Gimlet)

Directions: 1: We have the “PSB lazy way” and 2: The “authentic way” of muddling/mixing. My shoulder doesn’t allow me to make multiple Rangoons the “AW” way but I don’t think the taste is compromised at all by using the Magic Bullet or a blender and you can easily make multiple drinks in the pitcher and probably get away with a little less Basil.

1) Put all ingredients in a “Magic Bullet” container. Add 3 or 4 cubes of ice and “blitz” 4 or 5 times. Strain into a Martini glass (put a bit of the Basil “mash” into the glass). Garnish with a Basil leaf and lime wedge.
2) Fill a cocktail shaker 1/3 full with ice. Add Basil and “muddle” till Basil has been broken into small pieces. Add remaining ingredients and shake. Strain into a martini glass and garnish.
The sweetness or tart level of this drink can easily be altered by the amount of Simple Syrup you use.

Lemon Grass Simple Syrup:
In a large glass bowl or Pyrex 4 cup measuring cup
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water, I use the hot tap,
Stir then microwave on high 2 – 3 minutes, stirring between each minute.
Watch closely so as not to boil over.

Add 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons of Lemon Grass paste (recommended Gourmet Garden brand- found in the refrigerated produce department)
Let it cool on the counter or frig. Pour through a small mesh strainer into a sealable container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.

I loved this drink. I don't particularly care for gin or cucumbers, but something about the combination of ingredients in this drink makes them fabulous. I agree with the poster who said that it is not necessary to juice the cucumbers. Adding several slices before shaking gives the drink plenty of cucumber flavor, and may actually make it more enjoyable for people who are put off by the idea of a cucumber-based cocktail. Just be sure to save some slices to garnish because the ones used on the shaker will be damaged. This drink definitely screams "summer," but I have enjoyed it in the fall and winter as well--it gives me a nice reminder of summer that is pleasant when the cold weather settles in.

Excellent. Refreshing! I used agave syrup in place of the sugar. Will be drinking these alllllll summer lonnnngggggg.

I made these as an accompaniment to my version of Oysters Rockerfeller. I didn't want a wine pairing so I went with something light and crisp, and, since my husband prefers it, something with gin. We both LOVED this recipe. The only change I made was instead of muddling the sugar, I made a simple syrup and just mixed it all over ice in a pitcher. Next time I'll infuse the simple syrup with mint. but just a little.

Best cocktail I've had in a while . only we made ours with KetelOne vodka and simple syrup we made at home (we also added mint to the simple syrup) Fantastic cocktail - a little bit of work, but well worth it!!

Refreshing drink. Looks beautiful. I'm not a big fan of cucumber or gin yet I thought this was a good drink.

i substituted vodka for gin when making this and it was a HUGE HIT. people were apprehensive to try it but once they did, couldn't have enough.

Wasn't as thrilled with the cucumber juice as when I just muddle cucumbers with lime wedges in the glass for each cocktail. Two important ingredients: good gin (Hendricks is the best for this type of cocktail) and good cucumbers (English Hot House or Persians are less watery and more flavorful than the standard cucumbers). Garnish with a mint sprig and enjoy on a hot day!

Served with this menu, out of 12 guests, only 6 were brave enough to try and only one liked it. Just a weird combination.

Instead of gin, I used vodka and it was delicious.

This is one of the best drinks I have every tasted! It was served to me on a girls night out, and I have been thinking about it ever since. I am making it now as we speak for my gourmet club! they all want vodka, but it was GREAT with gin.

this is a summer taste sensation! the freshness is unbeatable. i am normally a vodka gimlet drinker and even prepared this receipe with vodka instead of gin and it was not nearly as good as with the hendricks. everyone i have served it to begs for the recipe. it is a huge hit!

We LOVED this, although (and this probably says something scary) we needed a LOT more gin. But very refreshing and different.

This is delicious. But add more lime juice, and serve in martini glasses or you'll get trashed. fresh mint leaves are a nice touch as well.

Not my type of drink. Both my husband and I threw our drinks out after two sips. The cucumber juice is a strange drink mix.

I saw this in the magazine and thought, I HAVE to try this. It's a delicious, refreshing cocktail that I now drink regularly. I make the cucumber juice in large batches and store it in the refrigerator. Do not bother to peel or seed the cukes, and wring out the puree in several layers of cheesecloth to get every drop. I found this method gives a darker green and more flavorful juice than just straining. Decreasing the sugar slightly was more to my taste. I tried cheating with Rose's lime juice--don't even bother. Although bottled lime juice does work well.

i always thought i hated gin. until i made this drink. it's amazing. add a tad extra lime juice.

I made a special trip to the liquor store to get gin in order to try this. it looked so good and the ingredients were so intriguing. I don't much care for gin, but this was a wonderful, cool, refreshing drink on a hot summer's day. I am definitely making this again.

I imagine this drink would be even better if you used Hendrick's Gin. While hard to find, the gin is actually made with cucumbers.

This is just delicious. The perfect summer drink! Perfect if you like gin and cucumbers, that is.
